Another (!!!) revision to Firefox 2010 goal

December 18th, 2008

When i went to finalize the Firefox goal for 2010 I realized it feels wrong, and in much the same way the “Mozilla as centerpiece” goal felt wrong.  (The current proposal is Reinforce Firefox mindshare and marketshare momentum). Mindshare and marketshare — and Firefox — are not ends in themselves. They are means to an end. So I’d like to restate this goal as:

Reinforce Firefox’s role as a driver of innovation, choice and great user experience

We probably need mindshare and marketshare momentum to accomplish  this. But having momentum isn’t the end goal. It’s what we do with that momentum that matters.

Let me know if this feels odd to you. This is a case where I’m going to take silence as a sign of agreement (or exhaustion 🙂 )

Mitchell, I like your revised goal. And I think that despite the efforts of Google on Chrome, Firefox will continue to strive to excellent in web browsing. Not just with pure speed, but with the overall experience. Firefox should continue the work on JS speed and performance, but that’s not all it should focus on. That’s how Firefox can continue to dominate to me. Because Firefox is the most well rounded browser out there today. It has 10 years of work, high performance, a massive community for add-on development, security, stability, and the best features. All without letting the browser become bloated and ridiculous like IE is. If Firefox can keep it’s core values while continually increasing performance and security, I think it will remain unchallenged by other browsers.

Also, I think user experience and adherence to web standards are huge for Mozilla. If Firefox keeps up with web standards and continues innovation on user experience (Aza does a great job) we’ll see Firefox grow exponentially. I like the idea of a new tab screen instead of a blank window. I’d love to see some content in the new tab based on some of Aza’s mockups.
